Here is an excerpt from my book, “MAKINGS OF A FATHER.”
Working in the garden can create character in a child.
We had a small piece of land in the front area of our house where Mom would plant greens, peas, beans, corn, potatoes, peanuts, and okra, which she loved. She showed me how to weed the garden and how to remove some of the plants where there was overcrowding. It was my job to keep the garden free of weeds; frankly, I enjoyed working in the garden and the solitude it provided. Working in the garden and yard is one of my favorite pastimes even to this day.
My mother loved to can and freeze fruits and vegetables. We were considered very poor, but there was never a night that we went to bed hungry as the wild game, hogs, chickens and the vegetables from Mom’s garden kept us well-nourished. Spending so much time with my mom taught me how to be gentle and kind. Her love and compassion were values that influenced me as I matured and became a man and later a father.
