Here are a couple of paragraphs from my book, “MAKINGS OF A FATHER.”

Stand up to the giants in your life!

I stood up to one of the giants in my life and here is how it went down: It was probably around 11:00 pm when I heard Dad and Mom arguing.  This was an event I’d rarely heard before as my parents were a loving couple and frequently displayed their affection in front of us.  I don’t know what caused the disagreement, but I remember my mother complaining about his drinking and staying out all day and half the night.  I’d heard my mom complain before where the discussion became heated, but never to the point where it erupted into a full-blown fight. This evening was different, suddenly, I heard my dad slap my mom.  Anyone who spent any time in our home would know how much I loved and respected my mother.

My mom taught or influenced me in everything I know about cooking, cleaning, canning, and gardening.  She was the rock that kept our family together. She was a Christian woman who loved God and family.  She is the reason I’m a Christian and saved today. But on this evening my mother was being slapped around, and I could not lie there and ignore what was happening, even if it meant challenging Dad, who towered over me and out-weighed me by more than seventy-five pounds.  When I arrived in the living room, Dad had slapped Mom once and was about to hit her again when I stepped between them.  I looked up at him as Mom stood behind me weeping; I said in a trembling and reluctant voice, “If you hit her again, you’ll have to hit me too.”  Dad looked at his frighten, ten year old son with embarrassment and disgust, and then he turned and walked away.  The lessons I learned from this experience, is never let an argument turn into violence and stand up for what you perceive as right.  I don’t know how Dad apologized to my mom, but I do know they continued on to have a loving relationship, and I never witnessed violence in our home again.

Sometimes it takes more than one person to tell another that he or she is wrong.
